We Love Graphic Design!

Here are some perty photos for you to look at while you're sitting at work bored and in need of some brain stimulation. We think they're amazing examples of great graphic design. Our own Graphic Design Company, Integraphix, creates some pretty awesome artwork, but I believe in plugging artists too. Enjoy!

Graphic Designers! Attract Better Clients: Know your worth, Graphic Design is a Business.

Lower-quality clients stink, but are an unfortunate part of the Graphic Design business. Even here at Integraphix, we get some demanding clients, but like I said before, that's part of the business. These types of clients focus on how little they can get away with paying you. They make outrageous demands about the amount of work they want you to do and how quickly the turnaround should be.
Sound familiar? Chances are you, and many other graphic designers, have suffered from working for clients like these. We all have at some point, especially when only starting out.
So how do you avoid working for clients like this? You attract higher-quality ones. Easier said than done though right? Well, you’re in luck! I have 3 simple ways to attract better clients who not only appreciate your work, but are fun to work with. They'll also pay you.
Chicago Graphic Designer
Integraphix
There are no tricks involved. It has to do with adjusting your attitude and approach towards clients and the Graphic Design business in general. You MUST stand your ground and not compromise on what you’re worth and who you’re willing to work with. This attitude alone will help and you’ll be well on your way to attracting higher-quality clients that you actually want to work with.
1. Don't be desperate. Make THEM need YOU!
Chicago Graphic Designer
Integraphix
You know why the desperate people in high school always dated each other? It's because they didn't care about the quality of their relationship, and didn't pay attention to their feelings of attraction and mutual commonalities. This applies to Graphic Designers and Clients. The absolute #1 way to get low-quality clients is to appear desperate. If you're taking anyone you can get, you'd better bet they're gonna want the world from you for about $20. As a freelancer or business, when you scrape for the bottom of the barrel, that’s what you’ll get. Low quality clients exhibit these traits:

  • • Focused on low price
  • • Unreasonably demanding the quantity of work and time to deliver it
  • • Wanting to make a million changes without paying you the extra amount of time to make changes.
  • * They also don't see your time as a billable product: only the end result.
Don’t be desperate – instead, make the clients need you.
When you turn the tables like this, you get to be selective about who you work for. And when you’re picky with who you work for, you end up working with higher-quality clients who:
  • • Pay you what you’re actually worth
  • • Agree to the quantity of work and time it’ll take to deliver it
  • • Know the value of a graphic designer's time and see their design as a process and not an end-product.
Don’t be desperate. Make the client need you. Do not listen to that awful  “what if I can’t get any clients” voice in your head, stand your ground, and don’t settle. Sooner than later you’ll start getting the clients that want you for you.
2. Don't undervalue yourself: Offer a lower-priced trial but NOT lower costs overall.
This is the #1 problem start-ups and freelancers get themselves into. Don’t cave in to reducing rates. When you stand your ground, the client will decide either that they can't afford you, or that you're worth the price. You can hope that they'd realize that THEY are worth the price, but we can't have everything. Remember: lesser graphic designers would’ve been more desperate and worked for whatever price they could get.
When pitching to clients, don’t tell them that you can reduce rates. Say what rate you work for and leave it at that. Let the client decide if they can afford that or not – otherwise, you’ll get the lower-quality clients that chase the lowest price and nothing else.
When talking to clients, if they say that the price is too high, use wording like “I’m probably too expensive for you, so you’re better off looking for cheaper graphic designers elsewhere”. Not only will you not settle for lesser pay, but you might actually provoke the client in a friendly way into paying you. They’ll think, hey, I’m good enough of a client, what does this graphic designer mean I can’t afford it? And they just might end up paying you.
That’s good and all, but very few clients will pay full price for unproven talent. So if needed, you should offer a lower-cost trial. If the client is unsure, tell them that you’re wiling to do the first task or project or whatever at a lower rate. Then if the client is happy with the work, they agree to pay full price for subsequent work. This way, you reduce the risk for the client while still standing your ground price-wise and attracting higher-quality clients.
3. Focus your message on the clients you really want

If you don’t make it clear how you can help, then you won’t be able to attract higher-quality clients who are specifically looking for that solution. So you need to crystal-clearly focus your message on the benefits that clients really want.

For example:
• When you simply say that you are a chicago web designer, you’ll attract amateur clients who are looking for someone to design their website.

• But when you say that you’ll impress the client’s customers that are in this key demographic (and the client has had trouble reaching) and make them more likely to convert by buying/joining or whatnot, you’ll attract the high-quality clients specifically looking for that.

See the difference?

Focus your message on the benefits the higher-quality clients would want:
• Decide who your ideal clients are
• Find out what problems they have that really need solving
• Clearly say that you can help with that in your emails, website, conversations, and any other messages

By focusing your message on the benefits, you’ll increase the chances of those higher-quality clients paying you to do work for them. More more tips, subscribe to the Integraphix blog!

Showcase of the 10 Best Website Designs of 2010

I want to start showcasing my favourite website designs findings in the Integraphix Best of the Best  roundups. This special beginning of the year post showcases the best of the best, bringing together the most awesomest designs from all of 2010 into one showcase of super cool websites.

A Modern Eden is an online App store for children. It has apps for the iPhone that are geared towards learning and development rather than pure addictive play (coughangrybirdscough). The web design is kind of rough, but also clean, playful, kid and parent friendly.

This website is most definitely geared towards the fairer sex. It has shades of gray, white and black with pops of color like red, blue, and green. The website and Society is meant to raise awareness about abuse towards all women regardless of color, creed, economic status or education. You go girls! The website is simple and beautifully designed with delicate features that the untrained eye might not even notice, but add to the elegance of the design. Bravo.

This website has a very...I want to say rustic birdsnest feel. Perhaps it's the Robin's Egg Blue background or the corkboard tan color, but it just feels so natural. There are signs of Swiss influence, from the + signs to the very simplistic web design. The design is almost non-existent, except for the grid and color. Frankly a pleasure to look at.

This beautifully designed website has little secrets all over the place. When you hover over their links, the typeface changes. And the lack of color except for Red really makes a statement. They're staying true to their branding with the use of red everywhere. Their typeface is also quite unique in the web world. Where most web designers resign themselves to Arial, Georgia, and Times New Roman, these guys said 'N. O. and went with the pretty stuff. Unfortunately, that's not very SEO friendly since their keyword text is an image, but it sure does look nice.

Feed Stitch

This website design has a very playful, very colorful attitued. It's easy to read, with lots of great typography and not a lot of fluff.

Carsonified

These guys have typography mastered. If you could tell from their website home page, their entire We Love the Web design is wonderful typography. Also the talk bubbles to the right are really nifty.

Conclusion
These are just a few of the greats. I'll get some of Integraphix beautiful web design up here soon! Remember, if you're in the marketing for a website and need a master web design company in Chicago, remember Integraphix has the best and the brightest. See you next time!

Blog Design mistakes you should never make

This article is targeted mostly at those who blog and get paid to do it or make money from their advertisements or through subscriptions, but when it comes to blog design, there are commonalities between unpaid and paid bloggers. There are also several common mistakes that need to be corrected or avoided in order to make your blog a successful one. For a design company, these should be no brainers, but for the general population, these are good tips! So listen up bloggers! There are some major pitfalls that you should be aware of.

1. Overwhelming Advertising
We all want to make money. But blasting your readers with ads all over your website is the easiest way to lose readers and turn off potential readers. Do NOT let ads take over your content - people do not visit blogs to look at the ads. They visit blogs to read what you've got to say. If you're only offering ads: don't expect a return reader. IF you must use advertising to support yourself or your blog, choose tastefully placed ads that are easy to see, but easy to ignore if the reader chooses to do so. Ads themselves are not the turn offs - it's that your site has ceased to be a blog and become a advertising page. Thankfully our Chicago Marketing Company blog doesn't have a ton of ads since it's through blogspot, but if you're designing your own blog website - don't put a ton of ads on it.

2. Huge Blocks of Writing
Unfortunately, the masses of internet and blog readers have a very small attention span. Your blogs should be short and sweet without huge paragraphs. Keep them succinct and to the point. Large blocks of text are also difficult to read on a computer screen and therefore should be avoided. Break up your content into smaller paragraphs, make lists, and make sure to write headings if you feel they're necessary. It will keep your readers coming back and make your content much easier to enjoy.

3. A Seizure inducing Flash Intro
This is rarely seen these days, but I have come across them. If they don't have a 'skip intro' button, I'll usually click off the page. It's not worth the wait and I really don't care about their pretty flash. Research says that 25% of readers will click off of a Flash page even if there is a 'skip intro' button. Our website - chicago marketing company, doesn't have any sort of intro to it. Our information is on the first page, and it's easy to find.

4. Using White Text on a Dark Background
This is a huge no no! For one it looks dated, and two, it's incredible hard to read. If I wrote like this throughout my entire blog, would you read it? No. You would turn tail and run because not only is it UGLY, but dated and hard to read. Your blog will look more like a journal or some teenagers Myspace page than a blog with something wonderful to say.
5. RSS Feed button is not easily found
How are your readers supposed to follow you without an RSS feed? Some people simply do not have the patience to come back to your website (or remember your carefully chosen blog name) and will stop reading your posts unless you put an easy to find RSS button on your page. Don't bury it in the lower footer of your site. Put it right up at the top of the page, where most 'Facebook' 'Twitter' buttons can be found. That way, you'll retain readers through RSS even if they're not visiting your website.

This is one of the most important buttons on your site! Highlight it!

6. Choosing a Horrible Font
Every designer should know the top most hated font faces in existence. The top three for me are Papyrus, Comic Sans, and anything from DaFont. Most of them are ripoffs of more beautiful (and yes they cost money) fonts that have real design thought put behind them. Most of them look like WingDings anyway. Any marketing company worth their salt will NEVER use these fonts in their projects. If they have in the past, hopefully they have the common sense to hide it. How does this relate to your blog? Most people feel the same way as designers. They don't want to look at your font, they want to read your content. Your blog needs to be readable. Your font size is also an issue. Using Edwardian at point size 7 is going to say 'I don't want you to read my blog'.

Internet Marketing Trends 2011

Top Internet Marketing Trends for 2011

Experts in the Internet Marketing industry are making their own predictions about what they think is going to be the best strategy or 'buzz' for 2011. Here are our top predictions for this coming year - let us know what you think about our ideas! We're putting our two cents into the Chicago Graphic Design and Internet Marketing scene.

1. Mobile Marketing and Smart Phones
We all know that smart phones have taken over the way Americans and the World are doing business. It was only natural that they take over the way we're advertising and marketing too. 2011 is going to be the shift when most people will have smart phones instead of typical touch phones, and since those phones have web access, advertisers must follow suite. Companies and advertisers have unprecedented access to consumers (YOU), and they're taking advantage of it. We here at Integraphix think we'll see an enormous push in mobile internet marketing and more companies creating phone friendly websites to support their attempts.

2. Local Searches (Google Maps and Place Pages)
The importance of user generated content can't be underestimated. It's getting more and more specific every year. This year, the push will be on place pages and the reviews users give your company. It will effect search engine rankings immensely. Companies are going to rise and fall simply why what their reviewers are saying about them. A word to the wise: Start getting your clients to review for you!

3. Video SEO
Not suprisingly - YouTube is a giant these days. It's reported to be the 2nd largest search engine in the world!!! So it doesn't come as a surprise that Video is an extremely important tool in convincing your visitors to use your product. Video increases the conversion rate of your visitors and is a super easy way to build a good reputation online.
  • Look for Video on sites you admire
  • Look for Video on Home Pages
  • Look for Video Marketing in email marketing, SEO strategy and nearly everywhere else!
Just you wait - we'll be right.

I cannot stress the importance of this enough! If any company out there does not have a Twitter, Facebook and Company Blog - you NEED one! Between the likes of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn alone, there are nearly 700 MILLION users. Now why would you not want a piece of that? The Internet is going to continue to build upon this and become more social media friendly and the SHARE button will become a powerful asset in getting your company noticed as we progress into new age of internet marketing

Finding a Graphic Designer

It's generally not easy to find a Graphic Designer that fits every need you have, but you can be sure that the ones who have a healthy online presence are the best in the business. There are some things to consider when you go about choosing a Graphic Designer (especially in Chicago) since there are so very many of them:

Make sure they have a strong portfolio!
The images you see should make an impact, you should like the feeling that you get from looking at their work. You may not be able to tell what exactly that is right now, but if you get the feeling consistently - you can be sure they're the designer for your company.

Are they marketing themselves?
Any designer can create an image and put it in their portfolio. The Graphic Designer than can also marketing themselves are the people who get the most business. Their work reaches their audience - their design communicates and motivates, instead of just being a pretty thing on paper. Designers should be able to say that their designs helped their client's business grow, or their event garner more acclaim or guests.

Excellent business skills!
This is a must! A good designer will stay on top of all your project's details and make the best use of their time and your money. They'll also be in constant communication with you. If you haven't heard from your graphic designer in a week - something is wrong.

Formal education in Graphic Design and Marketing.
Skill in software doesn't make a designer. My 18 year old sister in law can use photoshop. Graphic Design is an art. It is an art with a foundation of principles that have a direct impact on your environment. It also has an impact on the effectiveness of your company brand. Skill in software has little to do with a Designer's ability to translate your brand.

Why Compete?

What better way to get the word out about your marketing company or design studio than to enter a design competition? Whether you are a student at graphic design school, looking to make a career change to graphic design, or a veteran in the field, competitions can be a great way to challenge yourself, network, and exercise your creativity. If you're lucky enough to WIN and get published, it's a a great way to get noticed and gain exposure!

Cheers!

Tumblr Photo Spam

I'm sure you know that our own company, Integraphix, a Chicago Marketing Company design studio has a blog on tumblr at http://integraphix.tumblr.com but I though I'd share some of the photo blogs that popped up this morning. Our Chicago based design studio blog is very design oriented, reblogging and finding photos around the internet that are innovative and creative. Take a peek in your spare time and get addicted to Tumblr like we did.

Graphic Design Logo

This logo is amazing because it not only incorporates the Olympic rings, but is more than just simple letters. It's using strong linear and curved lines to create the word Mexico. I think it's beautiful. Apparently many others do too since it's painted on a wall. Chicago Marketing Company

This was my favorite find of the morning. I absolutely love this house. I think it's a true design feat since that glass looks like it's one solid panel. I'd hate to see a brick go through it, but we can all hope that the people observing this house aren't in a destructive mood!

I'm not sure what to make of this image, but they definitely took an innocent image and turned it into something iconically scary!
