Finding a Graphic Designer

It's generally not easy to find a Graphic Designer that fits every need you have, but you can be sure that the ones who have a healthy online presence are the best in the business. There are some things to consider when you go about choosing a Graphic Designer (especially in Chicago) since there are so very many of them:

Make sure they have a strong portfolio!
The images you see should make an impact, you should like the feeling that you get from looking at their work. You may not be able to tell what exactly that is right now, but if you get the feeling consistently - you can be sure they're the designer for your company.

Are they marketing themselves?
Any designer can create an image and put it in their portfolio. The Graphic Designer than can also marketing themselves are the people who get the most business. Their work reaches their audience - their design communicates and motivates, instead of just being a pretty thing on paper. Designers should be able to say that their designs helped their client's business grow, or their event garner more acclaim or guests.

Excellent business skills!
This is a must! A good designer will stay on top of all your project's details and make the best use of their time and your money. They'll also be in constant communication with you. If you haven't heard from your graphic designer in a week - something is wrong.

Formal education in Graphic Design and Marketing.
Skill in software doesn't make a designer. My 18 year old sister in law can use photoshop. Graphic Design is an art. It is an art with a foundation of principles that have a direct impact on your environment. It also has an impact on the effectiveness of your company brand. Skill in software has little to do with a Designer's ability to translate your brand.
